Every second year the Stadthaus Ulm invites young people to take part in the photo competition Kindling Democracy focusing on changing democratic values.

About the exhibition

Justice, freedom, equality, solidarity, peace, and security - these are all values a democratic society needs to be able to exist. The theme of the third competition is security. This term often is in the focus of political debates. But what does security mean to young people? Three age groups (10-14 years, 14-19 years, and 20-25 years) can submit photographs including a short description. We are not looking for 'pretty pictures', but photos representing the value and telling a story.

The upload portal for the competition is open from 1 February 2025 https://stadthaus.ulm.de/fotowettbewerb. A jury will select the best photographs amongst the submissions of each age group. All the photos will be presented in an exhibition and published in a catalogue.

The jury: Gunter Czisch (former Lord Mayor of Ulm), Katharina Jakob (currently studying philosophy and economics), Antje Meyer (picture editor Südwest Presse Ulm), Claudia Omine (lecturer at Landesmedienzentrum Baden-Württemberg), Robert Pupeter (photographer and co-founder of the Fotodoks festival, Munich)

Award ceremony: Thursday, 9 October 2025, 7pm with Lord Mayor Martin Ansbacher

Project management: Andrea Kreuzpointner
