On This Earth, A Shadow Falls Across The Ravaged Land
Photographs by Nick Brandt
Nick Brandt is using an analogue medium size camera to take his exclusively black and white photographs. He never uses telephoto zoom lenses, he uses his patience to get as close to the animals as possible – literally. He is not really interested in mere animal photography as such. He strives to document both the beauty and the destruction of the wildlife in East Africa. Brandt's photos are representations of a frustrating reality, where tens of thousands of elephants are killed every year for their tusks, where a rhinoceros horn is more valuable than gold and where the lion population has dwindled to a mere 25% within just 20 years. In 2010, Nick Brandt founded his “Big Life Foundation” with the goal of preserving the African wildlife and ecosystem – Brandts reaction to the escalation of poaching in Africa.
For the first time in Germany, the Stadthaus is presenting an exclusive selection of Nick Brandt's photography. This exhibition has been produced by Fotografiska, the Swedish Museum of Photography in Stockholm, where it attracted more than 220,000 visitors.
Nick Brandt studied painting and film at St. Martins School of Art in London and was a successful director of music videos and advertising films. In the mid-nineties he was shooting in East Africa, where he was immediately fascinated by the African wilderness – and by the animals inhabiting that wilderness.
