North Korea, currently the most inaccessible country, is sealing itself off. If photo journalists manage to gain access to the country at all, their work is meticulously supervised and manipulated. While secret and supposedly secret snapshots are flooding the market, they always depict the same views. It is a photographers task, however, to look for the truth behind the facade, and to avoid reducing the people of North Korea to silly marionettes and stereotypes. The exhibition with works by the three extraordinary photographers Nathalie Daoust, Reinhard Krause and Julia Leeb is expanding the horizons of our Western world into a system that's alien to us.

The Canadian artist Nathalie Daoust, born in 1977, explores secrets and taboos, balancing on the fine line between imagination and reality. When she developed her series “Korean Dreams” from the mysterious world of North Korea, she was aiming for a haziness reminiscent of dream-imagery, dissolving in the moment of awakening. Nathalie Daoust's works are exhibited all over the world and have been published numerous times.

Reinhard Krause, born in 1959, grew up in the German Ruhr area. He is the Global Pictures Desk Editor for the news agency Reuters in Berlin. As a crisis and war correspondent he worked in many conflict regions around the world. From 2004 until 2009 he was the Reuters Chief Photographer China in Beijing, where he was responsible for the photo-journalistic coverage of North Korea. Not only did he visit the country on numerous occasions, he also observed it from the Chinese border. Reinhard Krause received various awards for his work, the documentary “Shooting Under Fire” (2005) was repeatedly broadcast.

Journalist, photographer and film maker Julia Leeb has already traveled to approx. 80 countries, including many conflict regions. Her photos present the well-known mass choreographies and socialist architecture, but she focuses on the individuals who are part of the monumental orchestration – and this is what sets her apart from many other photographers who worked in North Korea. Julia Leeb's vision of the country is more colourful than what is usually presented, it throws a benevolent glance at the people themselves, without euphemising the regime
