Hitler. A Dog's Life
FLATZ
Wednesday, 20 November 2019, 7:30 pm
Tickets: 5 €
A Great Dane accompanied Austrian performance artist FLAZ (*1952) in the 1990s: "Hitler". The dog’s name, as well as the subtitles of the numerous photos are provocative; they also add humour to the project, sometimes shifting it into the banal. FLATZ: ‘Hitler is always with me, just like the historic Hitler is always with us, because he is part of our history, which we – as long as it is being suppressed, romanticised or tabooed – have not come to terms with.’
This name as well as the titles of numerous dog photographs are provocative, they make the story funny, humorous and sometimes trivial. FLATZ: ‘I want to force people to take a close look (…) Hitler is always with me, just like the historic Hitler is always with us, because he is part of our history, which we – as long as it is being suppressed, romanticised or tabooed – have not come to terms with. To call things by their name releases one from the fear of making mistakes.’
Sine 1974, FLATZ has been performing pieces that are usually very extreme and designed to provoke. He moved to Munich in 1975.
1 September 2019 is the 80th anniversary of Germany’s invasion of Poland, that startet the Second World War, which is the reason behind the Stadthaus showing the series ‘Hitler. Ein Hundeleben’ (‘Hitler, a dog’s life’).
On the occasion of the exhibition a revised and extended edition of the book "Hitler - Ein Hundeleben" will be released by Edition Cantz. You can order it via "shop" on this homepage!
