The selected pieces all deal with existential themes of humanity and society: David Lang’s Just (After Song of Songs) is related to the “Song of Songs” of the Old Testament, while Khoom by Giacinto Scelsi tells the tales of love and death in a far-away country; Luigi Nono translates the brutal reality in a factory into his La Fabbrica Illuminata; Laurie Schwartz’s Outtakes, a multimedia-heavy portrait of glamorous artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, meets the emotional realms of the deepest ocean depths in Clara Iannotta’s dead wasps. While Caroline Shaws Dolce Cantavi celebrates the human voice, Michołaj Laskowski’s Transnatural#2 simulates a digital dystopia. The deeply spiritual contemplations of good and evil, our planet, and the cosmos in the ground-breaking work Black Angels by recently deceased George Crumb are so relevant today, it’s frightening.
Two world premieres of pieces composed specifically for the Stadthaus-architecture by Antonis Anissegos and Hayden Chisholm promise a unique experience: concert-sculptures that are both alive and want to be explored in the physical sense.
The Stadthaus’ unique acoustic qualities have also been explored by students of Ulmer Musikschule, led by Elisabeth Haselberger. The result of their workshop will be presented at the matinée.
